Fight for the Future recently announced the launch of badinternetbills.com, in response to a slew of bills targeting free speech and end-to-end encryption. It’s a home base for people to take action against the myriad misguided bills making their way through Congress, all converged on one easy-to-use site.
According to Fight for the Future, “Despite previous protests and defeats, both EARN IT and KOSA have been reintroduced in Congressaccompanied by other legislation such as STOP CSAM, which would undermine end-to-end encryption, and age-restricted laws that restrict teens’ constitutional right to free speech online.
Newly Launched BadInternetBills.com Organizes Opposition to EARN IT, KOSA, RESTRICT and the Tornado of Misplaced Internet Bills in Congress
Digital rights advocates and grassroots organizers have taken to the internet to rally mass opposition to these bills, but misguided bills have targeted “protect childrenpopping up left and right. There are so many legislative efforts with similar issues that Fight for the Future decided to launch badinternetbills.com to address the agreements between these accounts and combine the efforts against them all into one entity.
The purpose of this site is twofold: stop this legislation and draw Congress’s attention to much-needed privacy legislation that would instead protect all people, especially young people. Fight against plans to update the site if new legislation to the same effect is introduced and use it as an organizing hub to support grassroots organizers drawing attention to these malicious bills on the Internet.”
Say no to bad internet bills
“While we share the goal of protecting children online, these bills allow censorship of life-saving content for LGBTQ+ youth and abortion seekers and target end-to-end encryption. Weakening E2EE actually makes children less safe online, rather than safer, as proponents of this legislation would argue. At a time when LGBTQ+ youth are under attack across the country, more and more people are turning to online resources for help. We need to ensure that online community spaces remain safe and valuable resources are protected from politically motivated censorship,” said Sarah Philips, campaigner for Fight for the Future.
“Basic organizers are currently drowning under the onslaught on young people’s freedoms and rights online by legislation supported by some of the worst groups and people in the country. Badinternetbills.com simply summarizes each terrible bill so that the average person understands how their rights are being flouted online while also being given an easy way to fight back. It’s amazing for those who want to do something but are overwhelmed by calling their representatives for the overwhelming amount of horrible legislation,” said one grassroots organizer, who wishes to remain anonymous.
